Four little words that traditionally precede marvelous stories of magic, mystery, danger and rescue. They conjure up wonderful childhood memories of beautiful princesses, little girls with red capes, bears, wolves, evil queens, lost children, ugly ducklings, pigs, woodsmen and so much more.

During the upcoming holiday season, Dec. 12-15, Curtains Up Pagosa! will bring to the stage one of the most beloved childhood fairy tales by the brothers Grimm, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” With a script by Tim Kelly and delightful music written by Bill Francoeur, audiences of all ages will be taken back to a time “in a land far, far away” when a jealous evil queen plots against the beautiful princess in order to retain her title as the fairest in the land.

Auditions will be held Friday, Oct. 4, from 2-6 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs High School music room. If you wish to audition but cannot attend at that time, call Dale Johnson at 731-3370.

Though this is a child-friendly play, youth and adults are needed to audition for the leading roles. Children’s roles are available for kids who are in first grade and up and include the characters of dwarfs, a mischievous cat and forest animals.

Those planning to audition should bring something to sing (bring sheet music — an accompanist will be provided). You also will be asked to do a cold reading from the script and learn a short dance step to perform in groups of six for the judges.

The cast of characters includes Snow White, the evil queen, a mischievous cat, a walking-talking magic mirror, Prince Robert, a huntsman, an enchanted vixen, Esmeralda (the queen disguised as a young girl), and seven dwarfs (Sarge, Gabby, Gloomy Gus, Ticklish, Spritely, Snore and Slowpoke), and forest animals.

“This play is not the Disney film version,” says director, Darcy DeGuise. “Therefore, the names of the dwarfs are different and a few extra characters have been added. However, the play maintains the charm of the film version with new updated music that will be sure to enthrall audiences of all ages.”

The production celebrates the 25th Silverado Anniversary of Curtains Up Pagosa! while also honoring the 75th anniversary of Disney’s film debut of the movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The genius of Walt Disney paved the way for these wonderful fairy tales to come to life on screen and on stage, proving that fairy tales can delight children of all ages.

“We are excited to offer this new Tim Kelly production to Pagosa Springs during this upcoming holiday season. We hope our community will respond with its enthusiastic support and congratulations to Curtains Up Pagosa! as we celebrate our 25th year of bringing high quality stage productions to our community and offering mentoring, financial support and artistic opportunities to our young people,” said Dale Johnson, acting board president.
