The fall color season is underway in Pagosa Country with high elevation aspen fading from summer’s green to yellows. Lower elevation foliage is also turning with scrub oak and cottonwood displaying beautiful colors.
The days are still warm, the nights are chilly, and the leaves are quickly changing. We have a variety of area activities and events to keep you entertained. Make Pagosa Springs your destination for a Colorado fall getaway. Start planning your vacation today!
A great thing about Pagosa Country is that it is bordered by the Continental Divide 180 degrees on the south, east and north sides. One can see most of the mountain slopes from town or nearby. Find a spot with this view and use a U.S. Forest Service Map to decide a road or trail to explore.
It looks as if the best of the fall colors will be starting the weekend of October 11th. The grasses and lower brush are turning quickly and yellows reach farther down the slopes every day. The colors make Pagosa a great place to be for the next few weeks.
The best viewing this weekend will be across the southern flanks of the area. Drive down Trujillo Road and get lost a while working your way east on gravel roads to highway 84.
Remember, there are big game hunters in the forest and you will be sharing the forest with them. Wear bright orange vests and hats, available in all local sports stores.
Along the mighty San Juan on Trujillo Road the colors are nice from Pagosa to Navajo Lake. The old train bridge still crosses the river a few miles south.
We took County Road 542 east from Trujillo to highway 84 for a sampling of oak colors.
