The University of Colorado at Chimney Rock exhibition highlights the archaeoastronomy and archaeology of this beautiful southwestern Colorado site. On September 21, 2012, Chimney Rock, thanks in part to efforts of CU students and faculty who have been performing research at this sight since the 1970’s, was designated as our nation’s103rd and newest national monument, by President Obama.
A thousand years ago, Chimney Rock was home to Ancestral Pueblo People who built more than 200 homes and ceremonial buildings high above the valley floor. Many of the structures remain today, and are designed to perfectly align with lunar events such as seasonal solstices and equinoxes. |
