Private
Schools in the Pagosa Springs Area
Our Savior Lutheran School (OSLS)
OSLS offers the community Christ-centered excellence in education
for Pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. Students with a
wide range of abilities are challenged to maximize their God-given
gifts, talents and abilities. OSLS offers a structured, traditional,
self-contained, multi-grade classroom experience. This traditional
approach to education is combined with the latest technologies
and college- and university-trained staff members.
Utilizing curricular materials that stress phonic language instruction,
mathematics proficiency, formal research, science, social studies,
Latin and the fine arts, students are presented with a broad spectrum
of learning. Each discipline is fully integrated with the Christian
faith. Low student-teacher ratios and a disciplined learning environment
serve to provide a standard of excellence in education.
In the 1999-2000 school year, enrollment was 60. Last year, it
increased to 80, and this year, enrollment is expected to reach
100. All classrooms are limited to 20 students except for kindergarten,
which is limited to 15. The new campus has six modern classrooms,
a new full-sized gymnasium, paved playground area and a computer
lab, all of which have been constructed within the last five years.
Student life at OSLS offers an environment that is drug-free and
violence-free with staff serving as role models. Students are
expected to respect and honor one another and their teachers in
a Christian atmosphere. Classes fill-up quickly and early registration
is strongly encouraged.
Summit Christian Academy
In 1997, concerned parents helped to organize Summit. Focusing
on students with learning differences including dyslexia and attention
deficits. Individual learning styles are emphasized, and a variety
of curriculum tools are implemented. Building confidence is a
priority for Summit. Many students that come to the school may
have self-esteem problems from a lack of success in other places,
and the school seeks to address those issues in a one-on-one basis.
Some of the basic curriculum and structure of Summit is based
on the use of the Lindamood-Bell phonics program, which was a
success at the Denver Academy. The class sizes are small, which
gives instructors time to pay individual attention to each student.
Last year, Summit had an enrollment of 12 students in grades 3
through 9. Under a new plan adopted by the board of directors,
enrollment is expected to reach 30 soon. Planning a high school
class for the coming school year, Summit hopes to have a student-teacher
ratio of no more than ten to one. As a Christian school, Summit
offers chapel and Bible lessons.
Tuition at Summit Christian Academy is $250 per month for the
10-month school year, with a volunteer commitment. Tuition for
those who don't choose to volunteer is $300 per month.
Pagosa Springs Education Center
The old schoolhouse concept is being put into use at an alternative
school in Pagosa Springs. The Education Center is a half-day program
for students with behavior problems and those wishing an alternative
to public schools. Designed for students in Kindergarten through
12th grade, the non-profit school has been in operation for over
three years, and focuses on the benefits of one-on-one teaching.
Some elements of religion are present in the school's curriculum,
but according to the director of the center, academics are the
real focus.
Diagnostic tests help to determine a child's placement. Sometimes
students spend a period of time catching up to where they should
be. They are then encouraged to work ahead of the average level
of their age group. When required classes are completed ahead
of schedule, students are allowed to take electives. The Colorado
Achievement test is given annually to check on the students' progress.
School lasts just four and a half-hours, but generally follows
the schedule of the schools in District 50 Joint, allowing older
students to hold part-time jobs.
Tuition for the Pagosa Springs Education Center is around $200
per month, with a $100 registration fee.
