DEER, ELK PLANNING MEETING SCHEDULED FOR DURANGO
The Colorado Division of Wildlife will hold a public meeting to discuss deer and elk management in areas near Silverton, Hermosa Creek and areas west of Durango, 6:30 p.m., July 6, at that La Plata County Fairgrounds in the Animas Room, 2500 N. Main Ave., in Durango.
The DOW is working to revise its 10-year herd management plans for deer and elk in these areas, which include Game Management Units 74 and 741. These reviews are conducted throughout the state and allow for effective management of big game herds under current conditions in each area.
The herds in these GMUs are in good condition and significant changes to the number of deer and elk in these units are not anticipated.
"Ten years more experience with these particular herds, new research, and better population estimation techniques will allow us to refine our herd population objectives," said Andy Holland, terrestrial biologist in the Durango area. "Changes to population objectives can affect how many doe and cow licenses are issued in the future, and changes to sex-ratio objectives affect how many buck and bull licenses are issued."
At the meeting, DOW big game biologists will provide a detailed discussion of herd status, population objectives, male-female ratio objectives and harvest management strategies. Members of the public are invited to ask question and discuss issues.
