Pulling for Colorado July 11, 2009 Youth encouraged to participate! Dolores Public Lands Office and San Juan Mountains Association are teaming up for education about noxious weeds on the Dolores District and we need your help. July 11, 2009 has been designated "Pulling for Colorado Day" and throughout the state folks will be educating and eradicating weeds! Here on the Dolores, Mike Jensen, Weed Manager, Lloyd McNeil, Trails Foreman, and Kathe Hayes, SJMA, are organizing a work day for volunteers to pull weeds and have some fun. Here is where you can help. The project will be on the popular Bear Creek Trail, north of Dolores, ~24 miles, just past mile marker 34. The weeds that are identified to dig are Musk Thistle. Volunteers will meet at the trailhead at 8:30 am to learn more about noxious weeds, how to identify them, and how to get rid of them. SJMA will be providing a sack lunch and goodie bag for all participants who register. Everyone will hike approximately 1.5 miles to the big meadow to dig weeds. Pack horses will pack out the bagged weeds. Please help us eradicate noxious weeds in the beautiful San Juan National Forest. Make it a family outing. You'll learn to identify and effectively eradicate Musk Thistle among others. Participants will be provided with garbage bags, tools, disposable cameras, and lunch. Prizes, water bottles and lunch for all registered participants. Limited to 30 participants, focus on parents and youth ages 10 and older. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Please call Kathe at 970-385-1310 to sign up and reserve your spot!
