We are at a critical point in the fight against Big Media. The FCC recently decided to relax media ownership rules, which would allow further consolidation and put decisions about what kinds of programming and news Americans receive in even fewer hands. The Senate will vote on important legislation to stop these rules and prevent further consolidation of our media ownership. This vote may happen as soon as tonight.
In Colorado, Clear Channel owns eight of our most popular radio stations, while Media News Group, who owns more than 50 daily newspapers, and E.W. Scripps, who owns more than 20 daily newspapers and 10 broadcast stations, own The Denver Post and The Rocky Mountain News respectively.
These new rules would allow one of these companies to own the "big three" in Colorado: a major newspaper, one of the local broadcast stations and a leading radio station. This is too much control over our media by the very few.
Senator Salazar has not committed to stand up for the public interest and support the resolution of disapproval. Please call him today at (202) 224-5852 or (303) 455-7600 and ask for his support. Once you've called, please report on your call so we can track our progress.
Without diverse sources of information, you can be sure that we'll hear only one voice, one point of view, and one attitude – on television, on the Internet, on the radio, and in newspapers.
A healthy diverse media is the cornerstone of our democracy. For our democracy to function properly, we need journalists to provide us with the information we use to make decisions about whom and what we support. However, media consolidation leads to fewer voices in our media, less diversity of opinion, and less information getting to citizens.
