Register for youth tennis

Registration for the first session of youth tennis begins Monday, May 12 and will run through Friday, May 30.

Registrations will be available at the recreation office in Town Hall and will also be available for download through the recreation department link at
www.townofpagosasprings.com. All registrations must be submitted to the recreation office.

This year's program will again be conducted at Wyndham Resorts by pro Dale Schwicker. A grant awarded to the town from the Colorado Youth Tennis Foundation has enabled staff to expand the program to include three age brackets: 5-7, 8-10 and 11-13.

The number of participants in each age bracket will be capped at 12 per session in order to offer as much individual instruction as possible.

The schedule for the first session, which will run June 3-28, is as follows:
Ages 5-7 will practice Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-11 a.m.
Ages 8-10 will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-10 a.m.
Ages 11-13 will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10a.m.-11a.m.

Two additional summer sessions (July 1-26 and July 29-Aug. 3) will be available this year; registration dates for these sessions will be announced when determined.

Each session will consist of four to eight periods of play/instruction and a tournament on the Saturday following the last scheduled practice.

This year's program will implement the United States Tennis Association's "Quick Start Tennis Instructional Program." This program implements a "play to learn" rather than "learn to play" philosophy. Smaller courts, smaller racquets and slower balls characterize the program.

In addition, a level-two division has been added for those who completed last year's program or have had previous experience. Cost is $30 for ages 8-13 who register for Quickstart 1 (beginner) sessions and $25 for any other session.

Participants must have a tennis racquet and non-marking, smooth-soled athletic or tennis shoes. Running shoes are not permitted. For information on purchasing equipment or adult tennis programming and instruction, contact Schwicker at 903-3119.

Contact Andy Rice, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151 Ext. 231 for more information on this year's youth tennis program.

Baseball assessments and draft

Assessments for this year's youth baseball participants in the 9-10 and 11-14 divisions have been set for Tuesday, May 13 at the high school ball fields.

Participants and coaches in the 9-10 division should report to the fields at 5:20 p.m.; the assessment will run until approximately 6:45 p.m.

Participants and coaches in the 11-4 bracket should report at 6:45 p.m.; the assessment for this division will last until approximately 8 p.m.

All players intending to participate in the assessment should come prepared for basic throwing, hitting and fielding drills, and bring a baseball glove and athletic shoes.

The draft for the 9-10 and 11-14 divisions will be held Thursday, May 15 at 6 p.m. in Town Hall. All head coaches should attend.

On a related note, due to a record number of participants this year, the recreation department is seeking two volunteer head coaches for this year's coach-pitch division (ages 6-8).

If interested, please contact the recreation office at 264-4151 Ext. 232. Coach-pitch rosters are being finalized and should be available to head coaches in this division early next week.

Games in all divisions will not begin until after Memorial Day; schedules for all divisions should be available by the end of next week.

For more information on this year's program, call 264-4151 Ext. 231 or 232.

Park Fun registration

Early registration for this year's Park Fun program for ages 5-12 will take place May 28 and 29 from 4p.m.-6p.m. at Town Hall.

The first day off Park Fun will begin Tuesday, June 3. The program runs through Thursday, July 31st. The new home base is the Pagosa Springs Community Center, located adjacent to Town Hall on Hot Springs Boulevard.

Drop-offs (8 a.m.) and pick-ups (5 p.m.) will be made there each day. We are "on our way" by 9 a.m. each day and back by 4:30 p.m. Cell-phone contact is available all day, every day. Weekly schedules will be available each Friday for the following week.

Park Fun is a flexible program structured to meet your needs in every way. We have differentiated, age-based activities as well as a flexible sign-up plan. You may enroll for a week at a time for a discounted rate of $100 per week for five-day care. This figure equates to $20 per day, or a mere $2 per hour for 10-hour daycare.

In addition, a 50-percent discount is applied for siblings. The daily rate is $25 per day.
Campers pack their own lunches, water bottles and sunscreen; all other costs are included (except for special events).
