Fishing Brings Big Money
To Colorado & Pagosa!
 |
| Boy, they like big ones! One fellow, a couple years ago, hooked one like this and spent an hour or so parading up and down the river banks and around The Springs Resort inviting anyone and everyone to take his picture...Please! |
Thad Cano, sportsman and employee at the Ski and Bow Rack, did some interesting research on the economic benefits of fishing. Fishing people are not like skiers who are easy to identify, we only see fisherpersons one or two at a time and they are not easily identifiable if not dressed in their cute uniforms and wicker baskets. But, they are here in good numbers and spend money benefiting the economy. How much money is stunning!
Thad discovered the numbers from state information. Listed below is the number of licenses purchased in Pagosa Springs last year.
SENIOR LOW INCOME FISHING………....…2
RESIDENT COMBINATION FISHING

RESIDENT FISHING ANNUAL……………….1749

Thad discovered the total dollars spent for the licenses above.
Thad totaled the number of licenses sold, closely approximating the total number of people fishing the area in 2007 at 13,161. He used locally available statistics showing the average visitor spends $150.00 per day while here. That calculates at $1,974,150.00 spent in Pagosa by fisherpersons not counting their fishing licenses fees. The total local tax collected is $161,617.08.
Total money spent in Pagosa that stayed in Pagosa for 2007... $2,135,717.08.
Note; The above numbers are based on one person fishing for one day, the money jumps several times considering some spend several days fishing here.
Anyway you look at these numbers, fishing is big business in our area.
