Open and Closed Forest Roads

By Phyllis Wheaton | Apr 24, 2008

During winter, most Forest Service roads are not plowed and do not allow for safe travel with wheeled motorized vehicles. (A few Forest Service roads are plowed under permit to allow private property owners access to their homes, but they remain gated and closed to public use of motorized wheeled vehicles.)

In spring, these roads remain closed to motorized wheeled vehicles, including ATV’s, to protect road surfaces and for public safety. They are open to non-motorized uses, including bicycling, hiking, and horseback riding.

Roads will open as conditions allow. As with all areas on the Forest, damage to roads is not allowed. When opened, some roads may be snow-covered or muddy at some point. Please drive only as far as you are able without causing ruts.

In spring, areas next to the road may still be deeply wet, which can result in a substantially stuck vehicle and damage to soils, wetlands and vegetation. Do not leave road surfaces where the ground is wet.
Check it before you drive it.

The Forest Service is already seeing damage to meadows and stream courses from mud-bogging. This illegal activity is extremely damaging to soils, wetlands and vegetation.

Most areas within the Pagosa Ranger District are closed to off-road travel with motorized vehicles, except snowmobiles operating on snow. Violation of travel management regulations may lead to up to $5,000 fine and/or six months in jail. For additional information, refer to the San Juan National Forest Travel Map, call 264-2268 or visit our office at
180 Pagosa Street.

Updates are posted on the kiosk in front of the office and under “Road Conditions” at
