Local Community Drug Prevention Coalition to Host Random Student Drug Testing Summit, Pagosa Springs, Colorado, April 24, 2008

( Washington, D.C ) - On Thursday, April 24, 2008, Deputy Director for Demand Reduction at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy ( ONDCP ), Dr. Bertha K. Madras, will be in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, to address local community leaders and education officials during a regional drug prevention summit on school - based random student drug testing - initiated and hosted by the Promoting Prevention Coalition of Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

School administrators, principals, teachers, nurses, counselors, social workers, athletic directors, coaches, and parents are invited to attend this informative drug prevention forum, which will be held from 8:30AM to 2:10PM at the Pagosa Springs Community Center (451 Hot Springs Boulevard, Pagosa Springs, Colorado).  The summit will be geared specifically toward middle and high schools in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Arizona, and Kansas.

The regional random student drug testing summit will address relevant legal and programmatic issues, and serve as an introductive for school districts that would like to learn more about drug prevention, intervention, and treatment programs, like random student drug testing. Participants will be provided information on various funding merchanisms for developing, implementing, and expanding random student drug testing programs in their schools.

Over 4,100 schools nationwide have implemented random student drug testing as a public health approach to drug prevention, deterrence, and treatment. The programs are community-initiated, non-punitive, treatment-based, and protect student confidentiality and privacy.
