Winter Survival Sled Updated

By Norm Vance | Feb 29, 2008

Update note; never pull a sled with a rope. The sled has no braking and will crash into the snowmobile when stopping or slowing down. If you must, try sliding the rope into a length of plastic pipe with no slack on the ends. The pipe will keep the sled from sliding into the snowmobile.

The recent snow storms reminds many of us that winter can be severe here is Pagosa Country and it is wise for those living far out country roads to be prepared. Here is a useful idea for a snowmobile pulled sled that could make a big difference when confronted with deep snow.

It is smart to have a snowmobile large and powerful enough to pull a load. Utility and touring snowmobiles with the largest track available are better than the newer "hot rod" type. The sled shown here is a low price, tilting bed, utility trailer commonly available in catalogs and hardware stores.

Buy an extra pair of wheels for the trailer and find an old pair of snowmobile skies from a local dealer or salvage yard. A local welding shop can make a bracket to connect the skies to the wheels as shown here and a towing ball bracket added to the rear of the machine.

In my case I made the trailer so that the snowmobile can be pulled on the trailer. Once the machine is off the trailer the wheels can be change to skies and the snowmobile then pulls the trailer.
