They're everywhere in the forests, chewing into the trees at an unstoppable rate. Bark beetles? No. The problem is houses, according to the 2007 Report on the Health of Colorado's Forests, which was released Wednesday.
The annual report calls "rural sprawl" one of the big problems facing the state's forests.
Add in the effects of beetles and a warming climate, and Colorado forests are "on the cusp of a dramatic change," the report says.
State Forester Jeff Jahnke presented the report to legislators Wednesday.
"The fact that the beetle is here isn't the issue - it's the fact that people live in and recreate in and rely on the forests," Jahnke said.
