Hunter of the Year:
One-armed bowhunter takes the prize
Seven years ago an unusual cancer caught Kyle
Ogle in his prime. Kyle contracted Synovial Cancer, a rare disease
having to do with a joint in the body. Kyle’s cancer affected
his right shoulder. He had treatment but ultimately the shoulder
and arm had to be amputated to keep the cancer from spreading
to save his life. Kyle was in his early thirties.
Kyle, an avid sportsman and hunter with a strong positive attitude,
was not going to be denied his sporting activities. He made a
special attachment to his bow so he could hold the arrow and string
in his teeth and began to practice shooting. Over the years he
has been successful taking six does and two bucks. This is better
than any average hunter!
This year Kyle wanted an elk. Hunting with Gary Rowe’s
Oso Grande Ranch Outfitting service and teamed with guide Brian
Hubbs, he ventured into the San Juan with determination. Brian
noted that Kyle is so at home in the forest and capable that he
often forgot he was handicapped! Kyle found and shot a 5x5 bull
elk and is to be congratulated for his spirit, his determination
and success in a very difficult sport. He will be hanging the
5x5 on his wall in Weatherford, Texas.
Kyle is officially named the Pagosa.com/Pagosa Country Adventure
Guide’s “Hunter of the Year” and will be featured
on the Adventure Guide's special page showing successful hunters
for 2005.
Any handicapped sportsman may hunt in Colorado with special dispensation
for most types of disability. Check with the Colorado Department
of Wildlife for more information.
