- More Fish: Pagosa Quality Fishing Project seeks
help

Did you see all of those photos last year in
the newspaper of happy fishermen holding nice plump trout? There
was a reason for that level of success, and that reason was the
San Juan River Restoration and the Pagosa Quality Fishing Project’s
stocking program.
Following the restoration project, some local businessmen did
phone research and discovered many other small river towns had
success with fish stocking programs, drawing tourists interested
in fishing. Not only did it draw fishing tourists, but it also
held them and their families in town longer, prompting extra shopping,
eating and lodging. It was a great benefit for local fishermen
making a win-win situation for all.
Starting slowly a few years ago, the stocking program is gaining
speed. Last year, greatly appreciated donations of $3,105 put
1000 pounds of extra rainbow trout in the River. This year the
goal is three separate stockings costing a total of $5,445, but
up until now the project only had $245.00 in its account.
The Pagosa Springs Chamber of Commerce has seen the obvious benefits
to local businesses and recently donated $1,000. The remainder
must be raised by donations from individuals and businesses. The
project must raise more money than in previous years and is asking
all interested in the river, fishing and Pagosa’s business
success to donate generously. Organizers also ask for ideas for
fundraising from clubs and similar organizations.
At the present time donations can be dropped off at the Ski
& Bow Rack on the east end of Pagosa Springs. There will soon
be an account at Wells Fargo Bank for direct donations—keep
reading the Post for information on when this account will be
opened. For more information call Thaddeus (Thad) Cano, Ski &
Bow Rack, at 970-264-2370 during business hours.
