Watch the full moon rise at the Great House Pueblo site, learn about the Ancestral Puebloans, archaeo-astronomy theories, area geology, and enjoy Native American flute melodies by Charles Martinez. Gate open from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Program begins at 7:30 p.m. Moonrise at approximately 8 p.m. This moonrise will not occur between the twin spires. Allow approx. 2-3 hrs. for entire program, which is not recommended for children under 12. Reservations required--tickets are $15. In the shadows of the awe-inspiring twin pinnacles, experience a unique part of America’s heritage at one of the splendid archaeological sites of the Ancestral Puebloan people. Chimney Rock Archaeological Area is located 17 miles west of Pagosa Springs on Hwy. 160, and 3 miles south on Highway 151. The site is accessible for guided walking tours (2-2.5 hours) at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., with a noon tour offered from June 15 through August 31. Adults/$8; Children 5-11/$2; Under 5/Free. Reservations required for groups of 10 or more. Great Kiva Loop Trail is barrier free. The MLS is a special opportunity to view the lunar phenomena of a moonrise between the two spectacular stone pillars at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area, which only occurs on an 18.6-year cycle. Viewing capacity is limited, so reservations are required for this fundraiser to support native Puebloan involvement at Chimney Rock. Make your reservations today -- tickets go fast. $50 includes pre-event talk, mesa-top ascent & descent, light refreshments & optional presentation afterwards. Allow approx. 3 hrs. total. Sat.-Mon. May 27-29: Memorial Day weekend is Local Appreciation Days at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area.
Chimney Rock Interpretive Assn., Inc. in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, Pagosa Ranger District, invite area residents to visit Chimney Rock to enjoy half-priced guided tours all weekend long on Memorial Day weekend. The guided walking tours of this ancient archaeological site, where the Ancestral Puebloan people lived a thousand years ago, average about 2-2.5 hours long. Wed. June 21: Summer Solstice Sunrise Program
Watch the sun rise over the San Juans this first day of summer, and discuss how the ancients may have survived, and why they celebrated the solstice. Summer solstice is the longest day of the year with sunrise occurring the farthest north on the horizon of the entire year. This unique, 2-3 hour event begins at the Sun Tower, a place not visited on our regular tours, and concludes at the Stone Basin providing two viewing locations. $15/Reservations required. Sat. & Sun. July 22-23: Native American Cultural Gathering & Dances at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area
Traditional singers, storytellers, and dancers from Hopi, Acoma, Laguna, San Juan, Santa Clara, and Picuris Pueblos.
Southern Ute Heritage Performers at lower parking lot at 11 a.m. Traditional Puebloan Social Dancers in Great Kiva at 1 and 4 p.m. No reservations required. Entry $10; Native American arts & crafts available. There are no guided tours of the archaeological site during these 2 days. Fri. – Sun. August 4-6: Puebloan Pottery Workshop Special workshop with potter Greg Wood (Instructor's website at http://www.ancientarts.org) Learn to replicate Pueblo III Mesa Verde, black-on-white, organically painted pottery. Participants will gain an understanding of the fundamentals of craftsmanship, design, and prehistoric technology required to create and fire this ancient pottery, as they hand form, burnish, decorate, and trench kiln fire using only prehistoric methods. Pre-paid advance reservations required, limited enrollment. The 3-day workshop takes place at Chimney Rock Archaeological Area. The $120 course fee includes all materials and 2 credit hours of graduate study. Sat. & Sun. August 5-6: Life at Chimney Rock
A Festival of Crafts and Culture

Interactive demonstrations of crafts and skills of ancestral Puebloan culture and regional Native American cultures. Free demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. include use of the Atlatl, basket-making, flint knapping, flute making & playing, grinding grain, pottery making, fiber spinning, and yucca pounding to make rope. Shopping opportunities. Festival is held at the lower cabin parking area this year. Regular, 2-2.5 hour, guided site tours are also offered: $8/adults; $2 /ages 5-11 (free for ages under 5). These tours are at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. No reservations required. Autumnal equinox marks the first day of autumn and is a day with equal amounts of daylight and nighttime. This unique, 2-3 hour event begins at the Sun Tower, a place not visited on our regular tours, and concludes at the Stone Basin providing two viewing locations. $15/Reservations required.
